Welcome to the Bananafish Short Story Competition. This contest is open to all genres and themes.
BOOTY:
First Prize:
- $200
- Publication in a special contest issue of Bananafish.
- A spiffy organic-cotton Bananafish t-shirt.
- A lifetime of literary fame and recognition.
*Please note: Fame may vary depending on demographic, self-promotion, and future accomplishments. Recognition may come primarily from family, friends, and/or delivered telepathically by our editor.
*Non-winning entries will also be considered for general publication and, if selected, will also receive a spiffy organic-cotton Bananafish t-shirt.
FEE:
There is a $15 reading fee for this contest. Please make your payment immediately before or after sending your submission by entering your story’s title and clicking the secure payment button at the bottom of this page.
*Entries will not be accepted until the reading fee is received. Proceeds go to support the Phoenix Burrito Project — a nonprofit group of urban cyclists who make and distribute burritos to the homeless in Phoenix, Arizona.
You may enter as many times as you wish, but a reading fee must be associated with each submission.
Winner or not, your entrance fee will help save the life of a starving person.
EMAIL:
Email is the only way to submit at this time. We do have a mailing address, but it’s subject to change without notice and may contain fictitious town names or bogus zip codes. We like to keep our creditors guessing.
Contest entries should be sent to: contest@bananafishmagazine.com
FORMAT:
Entries should be pasted into the body of an email or attached as a .doc.
The title of your story, followed by your name and email address, should appear at the top of each entry.
Please do not include pretty pictures, zany formatting, elaborate fonts, or other visual oddities. These things frighten our computers, scramble our brains, and may force us to spend your entrance fee on chocolate and gummy bears.
Place the word “contest” in the subject line followed by some version of your story’s title.
An author bio is not necessary. If you are the lucky winner, or if your entry is selected for general publication, a short bio will be requested at that time.
LENGTH:
Contest submissions should not exceed 5,000 words. All shorter lengths are acceptable.
JUDGING:
All contest entries will be read, appreciated, and judged by the Bananafish staff. If you feel your submission was stronger, funnier, or more engaging than one of our selected winners, you may send us a complaining email and rant about our literary incompetence. And we will read your email, and we will ponder your thoughts, and we will twist our mustaches and erupt in maniacal laughter.
THANK YOU:
And good luck!
*Submissions for this event are open until midnight, Pacific Standard Time, November 1, 2010. Results will be announced Monday, November 29, 2010.
